Seize Life and Live with a Purpose.
I used to laugh when my mom would casually mention how fast her life was going. In my opinion, I felt like it wasn’t going fast enough! I was ready to go to college, I was ready to pay my own rent, and I was ready to live.
And then the unthinkable happened; I lived.
I did — and I still am! It’s great. But I am pretty sure my daughter was born yesterday so how can she already be almost two years old? How is that possible? In fact, I’m positive my husband carried me over the threshold of our first home only last week. How was that four homes ago?
I finally realized — after becoming a mother — just how fast time/life really does go.
It has already been 18 hours since I cooked dinner. Seven hours has passed since I’ve seen my husband. Also, an hour has gone by since I initially laid my daughter down for a nap — and I’m just NOW starting this post.
Where has the time gone?
Well, I can’t solve the world’s problems for a lack of time; that would be a fruitless and endless post of rambling. However, I CAN talk about what we do with the precious time that we are given — which isn’t much.
I’m young. I’m semi-inexperienced and I lack any form of a seminary degree. But, I am pretty sure God didn’t give us a certain amount of time on this Earth just to whine and groan about the hardships of life. If this were the case, I should probably just quit now because — despite my years — I have seen and experienced a lot of heartache.
As people, we don’t know how much time God has given us. We do not know the hours, the minutes, or the seconds to which our life holds. We are clueless and for a good reason because if you did know… oh man… how differently would you live your life? Would you be depressed your whole life or would you live carelessly? If it were me, I’d probably be depressed.
There was a time in my life where I felt like the days were endless; consisting of mundane repetition and was lacking. You can read more about that time in my life HERE.
What I came to realize after a time was that I had been living a life without purpose!
I would literally go through the motions of a “normal” motherhood life without giving any thought to what I was actually doing or how many hours have passed. In fact, I had no care for the future or even the thought of it! It’s not that being a mother is a bad thing — it’s the biggest, most rewarding responsibility God gives to a woman. But, what my problem was living without motivation or a purpose.
“What do you mean? Isn’t being a mother a purpose.” Yes, yes it’s completely full of purpose and wonder. But, here’s an example (which I know you ALL can relate to).
Have you ever gone to the gym — or started a home workout — and not feel into it? Come on, I know that you know what I am talking about. Some days we feel like we are on the top of the world with our workouts and other days we go through the motions — praying the last five minutes will hurry up. Imagine working out with no end result in mind. So, you’re not working out for losing weight, a healthier lifestyle, to impress someone… you’re just doing it. With that type of attitude you can probably imagine how easy it would be to not push yourself within the workout.
You’re simply going through the motions; that’s what “without a purpose” means.
Now, imagine that purposeless workout as your life. Your not living to become a better you, you’re not living to serve others, you’re just…. living. You wake up, you go to work, you come home, you go to bed, and you do the same routine the next day.
What a boring, purposeless, life to live!
We don’t have to be rock climbing to live with purpose. A family does not have to make a million dollars a year to live with purpose. In fact, a person doesn’t even have to own a home to live with purpose.
A person can be doing exactly what I was doing — homemaking — and live with a purpose!
How does a person seize life? It’s simple; they live for God!
Seize life and live purposely for God. Everything we do, say, and strive for is to honor God.
If all God has in store for me is to be a fantastic mother, GREAT, I can do that. I can live to wash dishes, cook dinner, and sew clothes for God! I am preparing a home for His children and I would be a caretaker for the future of this world and God’s most precious treasure — our children. I’d say that’s a pretty fantastic calling.
But, if God stirs me to pursue something else too, I will follow His lead. Because God has a purpose for each one of us; He has created each of us with a purpose to spread His name and glorify Him!
Maybe your life seems like the life I described above; monotonous. But, maybe God has a purpose for you within the life you’re living! Maybe He has you at this specific job, this specific time, to bring someone to Him or maybe you will be the light God uses to inspire the entire office of workers to have a desire to know more of Him!
However, what if you’re not living the life God has called you to? Maybe you have yet to seize life and live with purpose.
Own Your Life: Living with Deep Intention, Bold Faith, and Generous Love is a wonderful book by Sally Clarkson (my favorite Christian author). If you’re really considering the idea of living a meaningful life, please check out this book. I don’t believe you will be disappointed!
I get it; I completely, totally get it. To seize life is not an easy task but it is probably one of the most important ones you can do for yourself! To seize life requires focus, preservation, determination, and inspiration (a whole lot of “tion” in that sentance). But most importantly, it requires being still long enough — in this busy world — to hear God’s voice. It requires dropping what you have been doing and following a nudge in your heart! Also, it may require not listening to what other’s have to say about what you should be doing with your life.
God will guide you! He will seize life — your life — and guide it but you have to be willing to listen, drop life, and follow.
And if you do this, I can guarantee 100% that you WILL be more happy. You WILL feel purpose, love, drive, passion, inspiration, and any other positive word you can think of. Why? Because you’re doing exactly what God called you to do and boy does it feel amazing.
