I absolutely LOVE the fall season!
The apple picking, the sweater wearing, the warm drinks, the colorful leaves…. There’s also a sense of love and excitement in the crisp air which makes the season THAT much better. For many years the fall season has also marked the celebration of Harvest.
But, the fall season is also so much more than these wonderfully enjoyable things!
I didn’t realize it at first. In fact, it wasn’t until I sat on my back porch blogging; surrounded by leaves that are beginning to change from green to yellow.
I’m not a big fan of the color yellow — or orange or red for that matter. Just ask my husband! I prefer colors which don’t look like they make up my fruit bowl. However, there is something about seeing these brilliant hues beginning to take place within the collection of vibrant green leaves.
We live near a river in the mountains. I have to tell you, there’s just nothing more enchanting than taking a walk next to that river in the fall. The crisp air, the light fog over the water, and the hundreds of trees with yellow/red/orange leaves surrounding the river.
Oh my word.
It was on my back porch that I realized how amazingly beautiful CHANGE can be! Truly.
We spend our life fearing change; a change in a job, a change in the family, a change in our appearance, a change within our home… we fear almost all forms of change!
And yet, God has very clearly painted a picture for ALL of us as to just how beautiful change can be for our life.
If the leaves did not change color in the fall season, the trees would die. Why would they die? Well, from my understanding the leaves take water from the roots of the tree to perform the process of photosynthesis. If the tree did not shed the leaves for winter season it would die because the leaves would take all the water from the roots.
All of you who majored in a science degree — did I get that right? haha
“No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.” John Donne
I believe God purposely made the fall season beautiful — full of vibrant colors — because He wanted to depict an image of change being a positive yet necessary thing in the circle of life. In the bible, God does not hold back when He talks about following His will and necessary change to follow. It’s just part of living!
However, so many of us are so afraid of the unknown. We are afraid of starting over — making new friends, buying a new house, changing jobs — even if we actively know it’s a better choice!
This is the discussion my husband and I often have in bed at night. It’s at night, after all the rush and chaos, where we can finally see the change taking place in our life. And you know what? It’s scary! The idea of moving AGAIN and him changing careers to a very honorable yet sacrificial career is terrifying.
However, there’s also so much beauty in this change we will be experiencing. There’s the opportunity to make more friends, the chance to live in a city with more opportunities, the chance to save lives, a happy hand so much more.
But, if you don’t believe me… here’s a couple bible verses which may inspire you!
A TIME FOR EVERYTHING
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:” Ecclesiastes 3:1
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,” Hebrews 6:19
GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
DO NOT BE ANXIOUS
(Easier said than done, am I right? But God IS in control.)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6
OUR TROUBLES ARE FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17
GOD IS WITH YOU
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
GOD MAKES A WAY
(God never changes BUT He does create change in our life — possibly for paving a way through uncharted territory?)
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19
And to lift your fall spirit….
