Hey everyone! I hope you are enjoying the beginning of this Christmas season like I am!
Lights are being hung, Christmas music on the radio stations, trees are being put up, and SNOW! Well, as of yet there is no snow where I live but I am hopeful. Snow is great for the first week or so — perfect outdoorsy/romantic fun — and then I start to wish I lived in the southern states just a tinge.
Anyways, many of you know that I am a stay-at-home mom and have a very low budget. Like, crazy low! Just check out How We Survive on One Income to get the details. Although my husband feels like he’s “failing” us, it’s certainly not his fault! Just nearly a year ago we were making triple what we are making now in just a summer season — crazy right? But, we decided to take a leap of faith and leave the job so that my husband could attend/go through a fire academy!
We are hoping this is a very temporary deal; but either way it still stinks!
I know I know… some of you are thinking, “Why don’t you just go out and get a job?” Of course I would love to get a job! I’ve always thrived in working environments and it was a great way of getting me out of the house. But, once we had our daughter we made the tough decision that we didn’t want other people but ourselves raising our daughter.
This doesn’t mean what you choose to do is right OR wrong, this simply means that we did what was right for our family and current situation. Plus, over a year ago we did the math and determined I would only be making an income of ehhh $20+/- a month once we determined good child care, diapers, quicker meals to make, etc. So definitely not worth the trouble.
But I still had a desire to make SOMETHING that could help ease the burden from my husband. He works hard; balancing two jobs and EMT class. There’s no way I could do what he’s doing right now! So, I did a TON of research. I’m talking, hours and hours and hours of researching ideas and possibilities of ways that I can make money.
When I tell family and friends that I make an income I often receive the most surprised look!
They had no idea that some of the things I obsessively do somehow, somewhere makes money. Yeah, some of it can be annoying to family/friends BUT if they are truly there for me then they put up with my repetitive needs of freelancing.
So, without further babbling I’ll share with you MY top ways of making income while being a stay-at-home mom.
Ways to Make Money as a Stay-At-Home Mom
INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT/DIRECT SALES
This is the most obvious and sometimes the most successful thing a mom can do while at home. Yes, this is the thing I was referring to when I said that it can “annoy family/friends” but ladies, we gotta make a livin’ somehow! Right? I recently became a Chloe + Isabel consultant and absolutely LOVE it.
I’m a high-quality gal with a low price tag so becoming a consultant for a classy company seemed fitting for myself.
The key to a successful consultant experience is to FIND SOMETHING THAT YOU RESONATE WITH. Seriously. How can you sell something that you don’t like yourself?
For example: many of my friends sell Norwex, Beach Body, doTERRA, and Jamberry. I tried two of the four mentioned companies and HATED it. I tried to sell something that everyone else was selling because I knew they loved it… but, if I am honest… I am just not much into all things healthy! HA.
Here’s a few of the more popular companies to check out!
SELLING HANDMADE ITEMS
This one can be a hit and miss depending on what you do and your location. My biggest success has been selling randomly around my community and through Etsy. But here’s the thing about Etsy, it’s like a giant search engine. SO, this means that it will bring people to your shop when it feels like there’s something worth seeing. Examples of this would be consistent activity, consistent sales, good key words/descriptions, etc. With Etsy it’s all about the time and energy that you put into it and how much research you do.
Check out the Brilliant Business Moms blog for more detailed information about selling stuff.
You could also try Amazon Handmade! I haven’t done that before and probably won’t because I am trying to stray away from crafting but I have heard good things and bad. Although, I love Amazon so if I were looking into crafting as a full-time business then I’d definitely be all over it!
WRITE AN EBOOK
And promote the poo right out of it!
Ebooks can be really successful if you follow the essential steps and promote it like crazy. I have yet to do this but it is on my bucket list of “entrepreneurial things to accomplish”! But, since I’ve never published an Ebook I will draw your attention to Pat Flynn who has written successful Ebooks and teaches YOU how too!
Great way to make some extra money while still in the comfort of your own home! I am not a babysitter…. which is why I say no 99% of the time. It’s just not my thing but it can be easy money if you like watching other people’s kids!
This has, by far, been my most successful way of making income while staying at home with my baby! There are many different types and ways to freelance so this will take a lot of research on your part to find the right thing for you.
Blogging is one of my freelance jobs that I have picked up this past year and I love it! (Obviously)
At first I was making absolutely NO money and you will too. It kind of sucks in the beginning I won’t lie to you. I would write, write, and write for hours only to receive two whole views that day. I mean, if you have a very large supporting family/friends circle then maybe your success will come quicker to you! But, for me it definitely didn’t happen overnight.
Last month was the month that I received my first blog check (after 7 months of consistent writing) that was $14.96. THIS month, however, I received my second check that was over $300 which I am very excited about! Persistence really is the key.
You can also make money through Instagram and YouTube but that can take a little longer (or shorter) depending on your content and quality!
- If you have a clear, concise theme on Instagram with a lot of followers then you’ll definitely get contacted by companies to be paid for advertisement posts.
- YouTube works in a similar fashion, just be consistent and create good quality videos! Sooner or later you will be contacted by your first company to work with.
But, I mean, you can literally freelance in anything which I think many people forget! Again, just find something that you’re interested in and go from there.
Currently I am attending an International Professional Makeup Academy with the hopes of freelancing as — obviously– an international professional makeup artist! (Which is why my blog has been a “little” slower these days. I forgot how much schooling takes out of you!)
So yeah, you can freelance in anything. Well… almost anything.
Be creative! Make a list of your talents, favorite things, what makes you happy and then do a little research into each category. Who knows, maybe you’ll create a huge business OR maybe you’ll at least make the extra money to get you and your family on your feet!
Of course there are other ways to make money at home but these are the areas I am familiar with.
But most importantly… pray about it. God is always amazing at revealing the unrevealed to us! I must admit that I tend to put God on the back burner when crazy starts entering my life. I mean, I tend to be a person who likes to have control on my life!
Hahaha, silly me! I should know by now that only God has the ultimate control on my life.
It’s a struggle, my friends.
Anyways, that’s another post for another time! Let me know what you come up with or if you have tried any of these routes.
